Brother Jonathan Ryan, SJC is a junior (temporary) professed member of the Canons Regular of St. John Cantius, an active Roman Catholic men’s religious order founded at St. John Cantius Church, Chicago, IL in 1998 with a charism of liturgy, sacred arts, and catechesis within the context of parish ministry. He has served as Principal Organist at St. John Cantius Parish since he entered the Canons Regular in 2006. He additionally conducts the musical formation of the Canons Regular.
Br. Jonathan's university studies were undertaken at Baylor University with Joyce Jones, at the Cleveland Institute of Music with Todd Wilson and Eastman School of Music in Rochester, NY as a student of David Higgs (M.Mus degree in Organ Performance & Literature). He served as Director of Music & Choirmaster at St. Anne Church in Rochester, was Artistic Director of the church’s concert series and served as University Organist at the University of Rochester. He holds the Associateship (AAGO) and Choirmaster (ChM) certificates from the American Guild of Organists and received the 2006 Choirmaster Prize for the highest national Choirmaster exam score that year.
Br. Jonathan has performed in concert throughout the United States, and also in France. He has won first prize in national organ competitions, including the Arthur Poister (2006), the John Rodland Scholarship (2006), the Peter B. Knock Scholarship (2006), the Albert Schweitzer (2004), and the Augustana Arts-Reuter (2003) competitions. He won both second prize and the audience prize in the 2004 Miami International Organ Competition, second prize in the 2004 Wells Competition for Young Organists and was a semi-finalist in the 2003 St. Albans International Organ Competition in St. Albans, England. Recently, he has been selected as one of three Americans to compete in the semi-final of the Jordan II International Organ Competition in Columbus, GA in September.
