National Prayer Vigil for Life

January 26-27, 2017

The Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception is pleased to host the 2017 National Prayer Vigil for Life January 26-27. Below, please find links to important information regarding the Vigil.

Right to Life Schedule 

Cardinals, Bishops, Priests, Deacons

Cardinals, Bishops and Priests are welcome to concelebrate the Opening Mass and Closing Mass of the National Prayer Vigil for Life, Deacons are also welcome to vest for Mass and participate in the liturgical procession. Registration for clergy is REQUIRED, please register hereSeminarians who would like to participate in the Procession of Seminarians should register here.

All Priests and Deacons (diocesan and religious) registering who do NOT have Faculties in the Archdiocese of Washington are required to provide a Letter of Suitability BEFORE January 20, 2017. Instructions for submitting the Letter of Suitability will be provided in your registration confirmation email.   

Cardinals and Bishops: Please be at the Shrine and vested by 5:00PM. The Procession begins promptly at 5:30PM. Vesting for Cardinals and Bishops is in the Upper Sacristy. Please bring an alb and white miter.

Priests: Please be at the Shrine and vested by 4:30PM. The MCs will brief Concelebrants at 4:45PM. The Procession begins promptly at 5:30PM. Vesting for Priests is in the Crypt Church on the lower level of the Basilica. Please bring an alb with you as we DO NOT have extra albs for loan. A Chasuble and Stole WILL be provided for Priest Concelebrants.

Deacons: Please be at the Shrine and vested by 4:30PM. The MCs will brief Deacons at 4:45PM. The Procession begins promptly at 5:30PM. Vesting for Attending Deacons is in the Crypt Church on the lower level of the Basilica. Please bring an alb and white Deacon stole with you, as we DO NOT have extra albs or stoles for loan. 

Seminarians 

Seminarians who would like to participate in the Procession of Seminarians should register here

Please be at the Shrine and vested by 4:00PM. The MCs will brief Seminarians at 4:30PM. The Procession begins promptly at 5:00PM. Vesting for Seminarians is in the Crypt Church on the lower level. Please bring a Cassock/Religious Habit and Surplice with you. Seminarians must be vested in Cassock/Religious Habit and Surplice in order to participate in the Procession. We DO NOT have extra Cassocks or Surplices for loan.

The Annual National Prayer Vigil for Life is sponsored by the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception, the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops Pro-Life Secretariat, and The Catholic University of America Office of Campus Ministry.

Over 20,000 pilgrims attend the annual Vigil, held the eve of the March for Life.

The 2017 National Prayer Vigil for Life begins January 26 at 5:30pm with the Solemn Opening Mass held in the Basilica’s Great Upper Church. Cardinal Timothy Dolan, Chairman of the USCCB’s Committee on Pro-Life Activities, will be the principal celebrant and homilist. All Priests and Deacons (diocesan and religious) wishing to concelebrate/vest who do NOT have Faculties in the Archdiocese of Washington are required to register and provide a Letter of Suitability, instructions are provided on the registration page above.

Following the Opening Mass, the Vigil continues in the Basilica’s Crypt Church with the National Rosary for Life at 8:30pm, followed by Night Prayer at 10pm. Confession is available from 8:30pm to 10:30pm in the Basilica’s Confessional Chapel (Our Lady of Hostyn).

The Vigil continues overnight in the Crypt Church beginning at 11:00pm on January 26 with Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament and Holy Hours every hour on the hour through 6am, followed by Morning Prayer, Benediction and Reposition of the Blessed Sacrament at 6:30am.

The National Prayer Vigil for Life closes with the Solemn Mass for Life celebrated on January 27 at 7:30am in the Basilica’s Great Upper Church. Most Reverend Gregory M. Aymond, Archbishop of New Orleans, will be the celebrant and homilist. 

No tickets are required for any of the National Prayer Vigil for Life events held at the Basilica. All are welcome to attend. All Priests and Deacons (diocesan and religious) wishing to concelebrate/vest who do NOT have Faculties in the Archdiocese of Washington are required to register and provide a Letter of Suitability, instructions are provided on the registration page above.

Parking
Parking for buses and cars at the Vigil for Life Mass on January 26 is available on a first come, first served basis in the Shrine's Lower Lot and on Harewood Road and 4th Street.
Bus parking for January 27 is available by permit only. At this time, there are no additional permits available.

Closing Mass - January 27, 2017
No tickets are required for any of the National Prayer Vigil for Life events held at the Basilica. All are welcome to attend.
